  • Second Annual Xtreme Nationals Set: For the second year in a row, State Fair Speedway in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma will host the $25,000 to win Xtreme Modified Super Nationals on Wednesday through Saturday night, October 12-14, 2006. This years running saw 126 drivers representing fifteen different states descend upon the big three-eighths mile oval which saw Terry Phillips of Springfield, Missouri pass United States Modified Touring Series champion Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa with six laps remaining to win the thirty lap feature and the richest paying modified race in the states history.

  • Flatt has championship wrapped up: The Super Sprint driver from Mustang needs only to finish one lap of the Sept. 2 regular-season finale at State Fair Speedway to claim his second open-wheel championship and first since 1997. Flatt, 42, holds an insurmountable 300-point lead over Kenneth Walker of Sapulpa. A driver earns 50 points just for making an official appearance, or completing one lap. Flatt finished fifth in Friday night's Super Sprint A feature and fourth in his heat race. That earned him enough points to hold off Walker, who won the A feature and finished fourth in his heat. Robb, takes another flip: Thirteen-year-old Super Sprint driver Trey Robb had a disappointing follow to his best week ever. Robb, on Aug. 19, became the youngest driver in the speedway's 51-year history to win an A feature. But Robb ran into trouble early in his heat race. After moving from the third row to the front on lap one, Robb's No. 12 shut down in turn two, and he did not finish the heat. Robb rallied by winning the B feature, but he flipped in turn two on the first lap of the A feature. Robb, a Newcastle student, was uninjured and waved to the crowd as he was taken to the pit area aboard a 4-wheeler.  (NewsOK.com)

Aug 22, 2005:

  • Trey Robb, 13, makes history with a feature win: Trey Robb, 13, made history this past Friday night by being the youngest driver in the 51 year history of Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway to win an A feature. As Robb raced past the checkered flag, the crowd of approximately 2,200 fans were on their feet rewarding the driver with a standing ovation. Cheering continued as Robb drove his No. 12 car into victory circle and into the record books. Robb dominated the field early with skill and determination. When asked afterward about his strategy for the race, Robb replied that it was, "just to get out ahead." Getting out ahead was exactly what the Rookie of the Year candidate did. He started the feature in sixth place, but after a restart around lap four charged ahead to take the lead from Bud Johnson for good. By lap seven, Robb was maneuvering through lapped traffic smoothly on his way to the $1000 prize and the new record. Joe Wood Jr, veteran Kenneth Walker, Bud Johnson and Kevin Pickard rounded out the top five in the 20-lap race. This is Robb's first season to drive in the 360 Super Sprint division. What did he think about the win? While his supporters were excited and celebrating, Robb seemed to be taking it all in stride. With a grin he said simply that it was "awesome." At 13, Trey Robb's entire career has already been awesome. Before the age of 12, Robb raced at I-44 Speedway, also in Oklahoma City collecting an amazing 66 A feature wins and four track championships. This year, Robb is number six in the point standings with two heat wins, seven A feature top ten's, and one top five. It looks like plans for the future of Trey Robb will continue along an "awesome" track. Car owners, Rodney and Randy Timms and father Perry Robb have confirmed plans to run Trey on the American Sprint Car Series next season with some of the best sprint car drivers in the country. Rodney Timms related, "The best way to get a driver ready for NASCAR is to have them race at as many different tracks as possible and to have them learn to work on the cars." He will get plenty of track action along the ASCS tour next year and has worked in theTimms' race shop all of this season. To learn more about this history making young driver, you can visit his website at www.treyrobb.com. Aug 20, 2005:

  • 13 yr. old racing star, Robb wins: Trey Robb in dominating fashion, became the State Fair Speedway's 51 year history youngest driver to win a A-Main. Robb, at 13 racing in the top division, in 360 injected Super Sprint.  Early in the A-Main, Robb moved quickly through the field by lap 4, the Rookie of the Year candidate, was driving away with the lead passing leader Bud Johnson for good. By lap 8, a multi-car incident brought out the red-flag.  Again, on the restart Robb had another young sprint car driver, Joe Wood, Jr. challenging for the feature win. Robb, continued on in dominating fashion to pull to victory, out driving Wood Jr. and veteran Kenneth Walker, Johnson and Kevin Pickard to rounded out the top five in the 20-lap race. • Scott Sharp Notes: Buntin points wrapped up, With just three weeks of racing left for the Factory stock class, Dustin Buntin has the point title all but locked up. • Sprint and Bandits Topless Tour hits OKC: The Sprint Bandit Tour 'N Topless circuit came to State Fair Speedway Wednesday night for the first time since Speedway promoter Lanny Edwards took over as full-time promoter in 2002. According to Edwards, the Sprint Bandits didn't disappoint. "I hope they can come back next season," Edwards said. "They put on a great show." With their big 410-cubic-inch engines and wingless chassis, the Bandits certainly provided a show of horsepower on the straight-aways and a propensity to flip over through the turns.  Five flips took place before the heat races were over; five breath-taking flips. One of which sent a driver to the ambulance and another to the hospital. (More at NewsOK.com)

  • Wright wins a record fourth straight: Friday night at State Fair Speedway, defending series champion and current point leader Gary Wright posted a first in fourteen years of O'Reilly American Sprint Car Series National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores competition by scoring his fourth consecutive feature triumph in the 25-lap main event. In the 435th O'Reilly ASCS National Tour feature event, Wright scored an unprecedented fourth win in a row in convincing fashion aboard the Wesmar-powered Southwest Express/The Shop/Richwood Construction No. 9 Maxim. "We had a really good car again tonight, the Wesmar and Maxim combination is working great, four in row is nice and I just hope we can keep it going," Wright commented from victory lane. Wright earned the pole position for the feature by racing from fifth to win the evening's third heat race. After the initial start was waved off for Toby Brown's wild turn one flip, Wright outgunned fellow front row starter Andy Shouse to snare the lead at the drop of the green. Wright immediately checked out, leaving Shouse to fend off a host of challengers for second. Wright's pace was interrupted several times along the way by minor cautions, but "The Texan" resumed his lightning-quick pace on each restart. Following the race's final stoppage after 18 rounds, when Gary Owens flipped without injury in turn two, Wright raced away from the field and snared career victory number 99 with a straightaway advantage. Wright shoots for the century win mark Saturday night at Tulsa Speedway. Danny Jennings battled past Shouse for second in the early stages and appeared poised to mount a challenge for the lead until a turn three spin with five laps in the books sent Jennings to the tail. Shouse fought off the advances of Nick Smith and tenth-starter Darren Stewart through the race's mid-stages. Stewart's challenges for second came to a halt when he clipped an infield tire exiting turn four and spun down the front stretch on the 18th lap. Stewart rejoined the chase. Smith slid high exiting turn four on the 21st lap, leaving Shouse to fight off fellow 2004 American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region co-champion Kevin Ramey over the final rounds to post a career best ASCS National Tour runner-up finish. Ramey settled for the show position, with current Sooner Region point leader Sean McClelland advancing from eleventh to fourth as former ASCS National champion Travis Rilat charged from 14th to round out the top five. Mike Peters crossed the stripe sixth after starting 17th, with 15th-starter Cody Branchcomb, Smith, Sam Hafertepe, Jr., and 18th-starter Natalie Sather completing the top ten. After utilizing his final provisional starting position of the year, leading Brodix Rookie of the Year contender Tony Bruce, Jr., earned Hard Charger honors by racing from 22nd to eleventh. Hafertepe, Larry Neighbors, Wright, Owens and Smith topped heat race action for the 37-car field. Branchcomb picked up victory honors in the first 12-lap "B" Main, while Jason Martin picked up the win in "B" Main number two when 13-year-old Trey Robb's apparent last lap pass for the win was negated when he weighed in two pounds below the required 1,475 pound minimum. The evening got off to a wild start when Dara Morrow and Sean Walden tangled and flipped wildly down the front stretch as the green flag flew upon the opening heat race. Both drivers walked away from their mangled machines uninjured. (ASCS Racing PR)

  • ASCS makes stop at State Fair Speedway: History could very well be in the making as the O'Reilly American Sprint Car Series National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores invades the Sooner State for a pair of events this Friday and Saturday night. Friday night, the series takes to Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway as Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores kicks off its annual fund-raising efforts for the Children's Miracle Network. Then on Saturday night, the series makes the trek up the Turner Turnpike to make its second stop of the season at Tulsa Speedway. Both events will be run in conjunction with the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region. Riding a wave of three consecutive wins, extending his season total to eight, defending series champion Gary Wright of Hooks, TX, could pen more entries into the O'Reilly ASCS National Tour record books over the course of the weekend. "The Texan" has the opportunity to become the first driver in series history to snare four consecutive feature wins in Friday night's card at Oklahoma City. Then, if Wright could pull off the weekend sweep with a victory at Tulsa Speedway on Saturday night, Wright would reach the magical "100" victory mark in ASCS National Tour competition. After sweeping the recent weekend of racing at Paris, TX, and Little Rock, AR, Wright made it three wins in a row this past Friday night at US 36 Raceway in Cameron, MO. It marked just the eighth time in series history that a driver has claimed three wins in a row, with Wright accounting for six of those occasions. Wright had a potential fourth win in a row on the line at Oklahoma City on May 20, only to have fellow Texan Kevin Ramey take the win after Wright was caught up in an early tangle. With his 98th career ASCS National Tour win this past Friday night, Wright, the defending series champion, extended his series lead to 86 markers over Bixby, Oklahoma's Darren Stewart, who suffered a rare DNF when he suffered a broken right rear wheel. Leading Brodix Rookie of the Year contender Tony Bruce, Jr., of Liberal, KS, enters the weekend ranked a strong third in points, just 52 points ahead of Sunnyvale, TX, teen Sam Hafertepe, Jr. Carthage, MO, shoe Toby Brown, the ASCS Ironman, enters the weekend ranked fifth. Others currently in the top ten in O'Reilly ASCS National Tour points include Rookie of the Year contender Jake Martens (Fairview, OK), Jan Howard (Byhalia, MS), Jimmy Taylor (Oklahoma City, OK), rookie shoe Lee Sowell (Nesbit, MS) and last year's Rookie of the Year, A.G. Rains (West Memphis, AR). The American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region features a heated championship points battle entering the weekend as well, with Collinsvillle, OK, racer Sean McClelland holding a slim 16-point advantage over Norman's Danny Jennings. Mustang's Kerry McAlister is third in Sooner Region points, with others in the top ten including Cody Branchcomb (Sapulpa, OK), Brian McClelland (Tulsa, OK), Foster Landon (Collinsville, OK), Preston Peebles II (Lubbock, TX), J.P. Bailey (Collinsville, OK), Derek Cottrell (Fletcher, OK) and 16-year-old Dex Eaton (Owasso, OK). Among others expected for the weekend's racing action are Liberal, KS, racer Jason Martin, who recently captured his first career ASCS National Tour victory, Fargo, ND, shoe Natalie Sather, defending Sooner Region co-champions Kevin Ramey (Fort Worth, TX) and Andy Shouse (Oklahoma City, OK) and former ASCS National champions Travis Rilat of Forney, TX, and Zach Chappell of Talala, OK. With Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores kicking off its fund-raising efforts for the Children's Miracle Network at State Fair Speedway on Friday, autographed Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne and Dale Earnhardt, Jr., jackets will be up for grabs via a silent auction. Friday night's racing action atop the semi-banked, 3/8-mile State Fair Speedway clay oval is set to get under way at 7:30 p.m. State Fair Speedway is located at Oklahoma City's State Fairgrounds near the intersection of N.W. 10th and May Avenue. • Out of Stater Smith Wins Feature: George White had a big win in the USA modified A feature Friday night at State Fair Speedway, but the Fort Worth, Texas, driver has his eyes set on something bigger.  White's win was really just a tuneup for next Saturday's Xtreme Super National modified race at the speedway, which pays $5,000 to win and can qualify a driver for October's $25,000 modified feature race. "I race at big shows all over the country," White said. "But every week before a big show, we go to the track and run in their weekly race." White has built a reputation as one of the best modified drivers in the country and will compete later this month in Batesville, Ark., for $100,0000. But Friday night, White has hands full trying hold off the Speedway's Randy Timms. (Results and more at NewsOK.com)

  • Wreck halts Racing at SFS:  Racing action came to a temporary hault with the three laps down during the championship feature race. Drivers Taron Bean and Andrew Evans crashed on the back straightaway sending both cars end over end with both cars nearly slaming into the light pole. Track officials and paramedics spent nearly 15 minutes talking with Bean and trying to ease him out of his crumpled car. Bean was conscious and walking at the time he was helped out his car but was taken to the hospital to be checked out. Evans appeared uninjured. Kenneth Walker went on to win the champ sprint feature, giving him a track leading six feature wins in one class. In the pro stock class, Stanley Reed Jr. got his ailing engine back in shape Friday night. Reed won the A feature finishing ahead of Tony Osborn and Steve Smith. Super sprint driver Chris Burns won his third super sprint A feature race of the season. Robert Sellers finished second with points leader Gary Flatt placing third.  (In part from NewsOK.com)

  • Reed hopes to recover:  Stanley Reed Jr. continues to have engine trouble in his No. 1 pro stock car. Though Reed leads the USA modified standings, the veteran driver said earlier this season that the pro stocks title is what he hopes to win most. At the time, Reed was leading both point races, but has since been black-flagged on numerous occasions for a smoking engine. Reed has fallen all the way to seventh. (NewsOK)

  • Merrill wins SUPR late model feature: With a field nearly full of out of town drivers, it was Sallisaw's Raymond Merrill that won Monday night's Series of United Professional Racers late model feature race. The SUPR series came to Oklahoma for the first time since the Louisiana-based series was founded in 1990. The SUPR series brought racers from Louisiana, Texas, Nebraska, and Arizona to compete Monday night. Of the 22-driver field, only three were from Oklahoma. Ada's Shawn Brassfield and Oklahoma City's Stanley Reed Jr. also raced. "It was a tough field of drivers tonight," Merrill said. "I was ready for the race to hurry up and get over while I still had the lead." Merrill passed Ronny Adams on lap 7 of the 35-lap feature race and built a solid lead. But Merrill soon found lap traffic with Adams and National Championship Racing Association points leader Al Purkey gaining ground. (NewsOK)

  • State Fair Speedway features late models for 4th of July Special: Tonight's late-model races at State Fair Speedway will give race fans a little bit of the old and a little bit of the new. Speedway promoter Lanny Edwards will put on a special Fourth of July show featuring the late-model car classes of the National Championship Racing Association, the Midwest Late Model Racing Association and the Southern United Professional Racing series. The NCRA, which used to be one of the biggest dirt track racing circuits in the country and a staple at the speedway, hasn't raced in Oklahoma City since 2002. The NCRA was made widely popular by their modified divisions in the 1970s and 80s. Coming into tonight, Al Purkey leads the NCRA standings over Johnny Bone Jr. by just 50 points. David Ashley of Zachary, La., sits atop the SUPR standings with Kenny Merchant of West Monroe, La., in second. The USA modifieds and factory stocks will also race tonight. The races start at 7 p.m. and will be immediately followed by a fireworks show. (NewsOK)

  • Jennings Wins ASCS: With just two laps to go, Danny Jennings seemingly came from nowhere to pass Gary Flatt on Friday night for his first super sprint feature race win of the season at State Fair Speedway. Of course, feature race wins are nothing new to the Norman driver. Jennings has won five championship and countless feature races at the Speedway and has done plenty of winning this season on the prestigious American Sprint Car Series. But Jennings' focus on the ASCS this season (he is second in points in the Sooner region) and a little bad luck have kept him out of the speedway's winner circle. "It felt really good to get a win," Jennings said. "It was about time I guess."  In the pro stocks, Tony Osborn won his second feature race of the season while finishing ahead of Steve Smith. Stanley Reed Jr. won his fourth USA modified feature of the year. Reed increased his first-place points lead over Michael Reed by nearly 400 points. Championship sprint driver Kenneth Walker notched a speedway-leading fifth feature race win of the season. Gary Owens finished second. (Results and more at NewsOK)

Stewart won the ASCS feature race Friday night, finishing one spot ahead of points leader Gary Wright. Jennings placed third. Wright entered the races with a 34-point lead, while McClelland brought a slim 16-point lead over Jennings. USA modified driver Stanley Reed Jr. increased his lead in the point standings with his fourth feature win of the season. Tony Anderson finished second. In the factory stocks, Shawn Jorski notched his second feature race of the season and is 90 points behind points leader Dustin Buntin. (Results and more at NewsOK)

  • Poff runs away with win: Warr Acres' Charles Poff added some air to his tires after his run in Heat 2 at State Fair Speedway. The result was a runaway victory in the A-feature of the Pro Stock lineups late Friday night.  "We aired up the tires," Poff said. "The car was lugging down too hard, so I freed it up by airing the tires more, which took some of the traction away."  Poff's No. 64 car jumped out early in the feature race, taking a comfortable lead. "I was trying to hit my marks every lap," Poff said of his focus on maintaining such a comfortable lead. "I was slowing down at the same place every time. I just kept listening for someone, but they never came up and challenged me." The only things keeping his competition close were multiple caution flags in the 20-lap feature. (NewsOK)

  • Allen wins first Feature in 05, Kim Kidder first ever: For championship sprint driver Robert Sellers, passing Dan Schnackenburg on the 13th lap for the lead was the easy part. Keeping his car on the track long enough to get the feature win was the hard part. Kenneth Walker of Sapulpa won a curfew-shortened super sprint feature and closed the gap on points leader Gary Flatt. Only 100 points separate Walker and Flatt. Super sprint driver Whit Gastineau added another crash to his tough month. Gastineau's black No. 2 turned over in the feature, the third time his tires have left the track in two weeks.  Larry Neighbors was going for a third consecutive super sprint win Friday night, but he violently flipped end over end several times in the feature. Neighbors was not hurt. (Results and more at NewsOK)

  • Walker wins two A-Featues, Neighbors, Buntin, and Timms wins at SFS: State Fair Speedway track officials successfully wished away the looming thunderstorms Friday, but a little rain was exactly what the track needed. High winds and no precipitation led to an extremely dry surface that made navigating the 3/8-mile dirt oval as delicate as an icy parking lot. The result was a bunch of crashes that made it a hard -- and costly -- night for the drivers but produced plenty of excitement for fans. One driver who managed to steer clear of Friday night's trouble was super sprint pilot Larry Neighbors. The defending points champion is trying to make up for two missed weeks of racing. Friday, he won a second consecutive A feature. In the other races, Walker added to his championship sprints points lead with his second and third feature wins of the year. Walker won the regularly scheduled feature race as well as a rain make-up feature from the May 13.  Randy Timms won the USA modified feature after qualifying through the B. Joey Buntin won the factory stock feature. (Results and More at NewsOK)

  • Reed, Buntin and Ramey Wins: Gary Wright's bid for an American Sprint Car Series fourth straight feature win was essentially over before a lap was even recorded Friday night at State Fair Speedway. The win would have made Wright the only driver on the ASCS tour to accomplish the feat.  Instead, Kevin Ramey won the second ASCS event of the year at the Speedway. After starting on the third row, Ramey passed and then held off Bixby's Darren Stewart for the win. Stanley Reed, Jr. won his second straight USA modified feature race. Reed, Jr. held off second-place finisher Alan Olivia. (NewsOK)

Lee Jennings had his sprint car go end over end in heat race four as did Jan Howard's No. 51 car later in the heat. (NewsOK)

  • Tora Rolls into OKC; Kosiski Wins at State Fair Speedway:  The end of 2004 marked a first for the O'Reilly Auto Parts Topless Outlaw Racing Association. It was the first time the series had seen a new champion other than three time champion Larry McDaniels. Saturday night Steve Kosiski began his quest to repeat as champion and grabbed a solid early lead in the title hunt as he clean swept the O'Reilly TORA Feature at their inaugural appearance to the 3/8 State Fair Speedway in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  A four abreast lineup saluted the fans of State Fair Speedway just prior to the A Feature event. At the drop of the green it was Raymond Merrill shooting out on top but a pileup was triggered in turn two when Al Purkey and Gary Gorby made contact, collecting Bud Longpine, Randy Timms, Ryan McAninch, Steve Foster, and Larry McDaniels. McDaniels headed to the pits for repairs to the left front of his machine while Timms, who won the topless modified portion of the show earlier in the evening, was less fortunate, he was out for the rest of the night. • Rain Shortens Night at SFS: All but one feature race at State Fair Speedway was halted by rain Friday night. Drivers did complete the semi and heat races, as well as the pro stock feature before rain moved in.  James Beane led the pro stock feature from start to finish on a muddy track. It was Beane's first feature win of the season.  The race card was finally stopped as the super sprint class tried to pack the track in preparation for the feature. But with lightning and rain gaining momentum, officials ruled it was too dangerous to continue. The postponed feature races will be rescheduled throughout the season. A feature will be run at the beginning of a regularly scheduled event. Factory stocks will complete their A feature next Friday. Super sprints will make up their race on May 27, and the championship sprints will run their feature June 3. (NewsOK)

"They can see us turning the wheel and trying to negotiate the track."  Timms is one of a few drivers in the Oklahoma City area who will race a late model car in Saturday night's Tora Late Model show, which is being promoted by Greg Moore. Timms is a regular in the speedway's USA modified class, which races on Friday nights. But Timms said it is hard to beat driving a late-model. The late model feature winner will get $2,000. The USA modified feature pays $1,000 to the winner. (NewsOK)

  • Drake Wins Again, Hughes Falls Short: On Sunday, Jason Hughes' car was better. He dominated the feature race through 18 laps with a solid lead over second-place Drake. But on turn four of the 18th lap, Hughes pulled off the track with engine trouble to give Drake the lead and a win before an estimated 1,800 fans.  "He (Hughes) had a better car than we had," Drake said. "But it is getting tougher and tougher to win races. We will take it any way we can get it."  Especially when $5,000 is on the line. The payout was Drake's biggest of the season. For Hughes, one of the most-successful modified drivers in the country, the loss was heart-breaking.  (NewsOK)

  • Drake Wins Day 1 of Xtreme Nationals at SFS: For USA modified driver Jason Hughes, this weekend's Extreme Super National races at State Fair Speedway is nothing more than a business trip. The driver from Colcord said he made nearly $100,000 in winnings last season with 29 feature race wins. Hughes races in USA modified events all over the country. This year his season started in February at a race in Florida and will end in December with a race in Texas.  Because of the unified car specifications, the USA modifieds race all over the country and are the largest dirt track car class in the nation. Hughes said he has been on the road up to three straight weeks and will travel all the way to Wisconsin and Minnesota later in the year.  "I'm starting to get used to him being gone so much," Jason's wife, Alicia, said. "I try to stay active to keep from missing him so much, but it was really hard at first."  (NewsOK)

  • Wood Wins SFS: Danny Wood was happy to be racing at his home track on Friday night at State Fair Speedway. Wood proved as such by winning the American Sprint Car Series Sooner Region feature race. The Norman driver also finished first in his heat race on a chilly night that attracted an estimated 1,600 fans  But Wood's heart appeared torn on an otherwise successful night.  Though happy to be driving for car owner Lanny Roe and sponsor The Shop Diesel Service, Wood misses his days racing with the pro World of Outlaws. • Sellers, Burns, Reed, Clemmons Win at SFS: Robert Sellers may have crossed the finished line second but he was scored the victory in the super sprint division as weekly racing action continued at State Fair Speedway in Oklahoma City on Friday night. Chris Burns took the lead just past the races midway point and held on to win the tracks championship sprint division. Other winners included Stanley Reed Jr. and Steve Clemmons.  Cale Levescy and Whit Gastineau started on the front row for the twenty lap super sprint feature with Gastineau taking the lead as the green flag fell. Bruce Jennings, Travis Scott, Sellers and sixteenth starting Larry Neighbors gave chase to the leader the first couple of laps before Neighbors moved passed Sellers and Scott for third down the front stretch on lap three before taking over the top spot from Gastineau down the backstretch.  By lap eight Neighbors, driving the F-5 chassis house car, had quickly built a commanding full stretch advantage. Sellers moved passed Gastineau for the runner up position on lap nine with Jennings and David Lambert your top five at the races midway point. At this point the leaders began entering heavy lapped traffic with Neighbors once dominating full straightway lead now slowly evaporating to eight car lengths by lap sixteen. Sellers continued his chase the final four laps before finally closing to three car lengths by lap nineteen. Neighbors would keep his pace the final lap, however, and go on to take the three car length victory over Sellers. (In part by David Smith, Jr. WhoWon)

  • Buntin Family Factory Stocks: If you're not a part of the Buntin family, you may have a tough time winning the factory stock points title at State Fair Speedway this season.  In fact, you may have a tough time winning a feature race.  The top five places in the factory point standings are occupied either by a Buntin or a driver related by marriage.  "Yeah, I think one of us will win (the championship)," Jessie Buntin said.  Jessie is the newest in a long line of Buntin racers. The 16-year-old won last week's feature race and rounds out the top five in points. Jesse's cousin, Dustin, leads, with cousins Shawn Jorski, Justin Allen and Joey Buntin filling in the middle. Jessie's uncle, Jody, also drives a factory stock. The Buntin family racing tree is tall and somewhat complicated. Jessie's father, Mark, used to race, and his brother, Lloyd, started the racing tradition in the 1969.  Lloyd's son, Lloyd II, drives a USA modified. Justin Allen's father, Tim, married into the Buntin family and was a former factory stock point champion. (NewsOK)

  • In the factory stocks, Jessie Buntin finished first in the A feature while points leader Dustin Buntin finished second.

  • Big Payout at SFS; Xtreme Super Nationals: Local race promoter Greg Moore has announced a series of races at State Fair Speedway that will ultimately lead to a $25,000 first-place prize, possibly the biggest payout in the speedway's history.  Moore is calling the event the Extreme Super Nationals. The nationals will consist of three race cards scheduled for April 30-May 1, July 16-17 and Oct. 13-15. The last event, in October, will be worth $25,000 to the final A feature winner.  "By far, it is the biggest race to ever happen here," Moore said.  Factory stock and championship sprints will also race, but the USA modifieds are what make such a big race possible.  The modifieds are the largest dirt track class in the country. The cars race in nearly every state with few variations in rules and engine restrictions.  Speedway modified driver Randy Timms and his father, Rodney, helped make the event possible with some financial backing.  Feature race winners of the first two Extreme events will collect $1,000 and an automatic spot into the $25,000 feature race in October. Moore said the final weekend's total purse equates to $150,000.  Moore is trying to get NASCAR driver Bill Elliott to attend the race -- and possibly race. Moore said he has almost reached an agreement for Elliott to drive in the $25,000 feature race.  "We still need to sign the paperwork," Moore said. "But we plan on him driving a modified painted to look like his own stock car." (NewsOK)

  • Rough Start for T. Robb: It was a night of firsts for 12-year-old Super Sprint driver Trey Robb.  It was his first night to race at State Fair Speedway -- and the first time he wasn't one of the dominant drivers in the field. Robb had a tough night Friday night, spinning out in his heat race and then suffering major damage to his car when he hit a tractor tire barrier in the first lap of the A feature. "I was mad at myself for spinning out," Robb said in the pit area before the 20-lap A feature. "The car was a little too tight." There were some bright spots for the young driver, who sometimes showed signs of inexperience but certainly no indication of intimidation. In fact, Robb, who won 66 mini-sprint A features over the last four seasons at I-44 Speedway in south Oklahoma City, might have been too aggressive at times. Robb already has his own T-shirts on sale at the speedway and will be signing autographs before next Friday's races along with Randy Timms and Jeff Rozelle. Peters won the Super Sprint A feature, outlasting Walker and Michelle Decker. In other racing action Friday night, Shawn Jorski won the factory stock feature race. Stanley Reed Jr. won both his heat race on the USA modified feature, and he swept the heat and feature race in the pro stock class. (NewsOK)

  • Trey Robb Makes Debut Tonight:  Trey Robb is barely old enough and tall enough to ride a roller coaster.   But tonight at State Fair Speedway, the 12-year-old will buckle himself behind the steering wheel of a fuel-injected sprint car and race against some of the best drivers around.  Robb's parents and track promoter Lanny Edwards have decided to let the 5-foot-2, 95-pound Newcastle Middle School student become the youngest driver to ever race at 51-year-old State Fair Speedway.  "Watching him race is just amazing," said Randy Timms, a longtime driver at State Fair whose father, Rodney, sponsors Robb's car. "It is like watching a 25- or 30-year-old. If you just saw him drive, you couldn't be convinced that he was a 12-year-old until he got out of the car.  (NewsOK)

April 1, 2005:

  • SFS Faces Dropping Count and Fuel Prices: Track promoters face problems other than high gas prices. Edwards estimates 47 tracks around the country closed before the end of the last racing season. Even though State Fair Speedway has seen a steady drop in attendance since 2002, Edwards feels good about racing staying around in Oklahoma City.  "The thing that keeps me in business is that I don't owe anybody anything," Edwards said. "I do most of the work myself so I can keep my overhead down." Top stock: If you want to win some money, pro stock is a good division to be in this season. Traditionally one of the most popular classes at the Speedway, only 20 pro stock drivers are registered to race this season. Track conditions: Edwards said he tries to improve his racing facilities every season. This year, he has hauled in 400 loads of new clay for a better track surface and has increased the bank in the turns. (NewsOK)
