Drivers say sprint cars are safe: ASCS drivers at State Fair Speedway on Friday night said it would be hard to make the cars any safer. "It would make it really hard to get out of the car if something happened.” Natalie Sather, an ASCS driver from Fargo, N.D., said she has walked away from numerous accidents because the full-sized sprinters are so safe. "In Knoxville, last year, I was going about 110 to 120 (mph) and hit the wall dead on,” she said. "If my car weren't built so well, who knows what would have happened?” (The Oklahoman)

I-44 Speedway likely to make safety changes: No I-44 officials have confirmed whether racing will continue Saturday, but fans and parents have commented on discussion boards on the I-44 Web site, claiming races will continue as scheduled but with many changes. Greg Moore, whose 12-year-old daughter races in the Restrictor Class at I-44, said track owner Clyde Steen is embracing new safety precautions to ensure another tragedy like White's is avoided. Those precautions include fire retardant uniforms for track officials, a 500-gallon water tank available with a pump and foam fire extinguishers that will spray for up to 55 seconds. "They might not have been very prepared before (White's wreck),” Moore said. "But I would say they are more prepared than any other track around. I feel very safe about my daughter racing.” Steen, the I-44 Speedway owner, has not commented to The Oklahoman since White's crash. (The Oklahoman)

Family wants more safety regulations at speedways: Charlie White looks at the half of his 12-year-old daughter's body charred by flames from a race car fire Saturday and sees a stark wake-up call for racing communities everywhere. "The reason why Harli got burnt so bad is because the facilities there at the track didn't have the proper safety equipment on their part to get her out of the car,” Charlie White said. "The state of Oklahoma should be required to have some type of safety procedure in order.” The White family is calling for more safety regulation of private racetracks similar to the one where Harli was burned. The owners of I-44 Speedway, where the fire occurred, haven't responded to requests this week to discuss Saturday's fire. (The Oklahoman)

ASCS Sooner Region set for OKC/Lawton Weekend: The American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region forces will be making tracks up and down the H.E. Bailey Turnpike this weekend as the series embarks upon the first of three Oklahoma City-Lawton weekend doubles. On Friday night, the series takes to Oklahoma City's 3/8-mile State Fair Speedway clay oval. Then on Saturday night, it's a quick run down Interstate 44 to Lawton Speedway's ¼-mile clay oval. The pair of tracks have combined to host approximately one-third of the ASCS Sooner Region events since the series inception in 2001, with 16 events at State Fair Speedway and 19 events at Lawton Speedway. Last year, weather limited the ASCS Sooner Region to just one event at each track, with Danny Jennings picking up his first ASCS win at Oklahoma City and Kevin Ramey adding his fifth Sooner Region score at Lawton. There have been seven different winners in as many ASCS Sooner Region events at State Fair Speedway dating back to 2005, while Ramey and Sean McClelland have split the six Sooner Region features contested at Lawton Speedway since the start of the 2005 season. The American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region kicked off the 2008 season this past Saturday night, with National Tour contender Travis Rilat of Forney, TX, besting the 41-car field by beating defending ASCS Sooner Region champion Brian McClelland to the stripe. While Tulsa's Brian McClelland fared the best of the 2008 Sooner Region title contenders in the season opener, others that started out in strong fashion included Graham, TX, shoe Kolt Walker (4th), Glenpool, OK, racer Matt Covington (7th) and Fort Worth's J.P. Bailey (8th). Friday's action at Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway fires off at 7:30 p.m., with Saturday's event at Lawton Speedway going green at 8:00 p.m. (ASCS PR)
